Charlie... Circa 1981

Now this was a fun time! Madeline, sweet Madeline, but to me she’ll always simply be “Charlie”. There was a time when Robbie Meade actually played a stand up bass and was even a little shy. Robbie? Shy? Naw, can’t be that CalypsoNut we all know and love? Oh yes, and really and truly my little brother. During this time, Robbie, Charlie, and I put together a fun time group. I can’t really tell you what genre we adopted, all I can say is if it felt good and sounded rich and full, we played it. .Everything from Simon and Garfunkel to James Taylor, Harry Chapin to Tex Ritter, from Carly Simon to the Beatles. Go figure. We just had a ball and turned a little pub known back then as “Farren’s Wet and Dry Goods” into a happy, fun place to hang out and sing along every Friday and Saturday night for a few months. We had a drink and song called “Doctor Nightlife”. All I can say is that when Charlie and I sang a love song together, people listened. Robbie kept the sound all together, bringing up the bottom and keeping the beat. I still remember him breaking in on the vocals (You owe me!) I played mostly 12 string during this time. A little chorus fattened things up and Madeline played 6 string, so things got real full when you added Robbie's upright bass. It was a real neat experience for the three of us and our audience. In fact, it was really the audience of friends and patrons who made this time in my musical journey so special. Thanks Robbie, Thanks fans, and especially, Thanks to you, Charlie! You showed me how to let the love shine in the love songs. So, as you are checking out the “Charlie” pictures, you’ll see what I mean by "It’s been a good ride!".

p.s…We named the band “Charlie” after a long discussion about what we should call ourselves. When Madeline asked my opinion I simply said “ Sorry Charlie I haven’t come up with anything catchy yet” She said, That’s it! We’ll call ourselves “Charlie”. From that day until now, Madeline remains “Charlie, if only to me!

webmasters note: This trio opened musical doors for me for which I will always be grateful. And, after 26 years I'll finally and shyly say that I had a horrible crush on Madeline. She was so hot, but I was so 17, and she was so married. If you have stories or memories of Charlie, please drop me (robbie.meade@gmail.com) or Brooke an email.
