The Davidson Exchange ... circa 1971

After an extended hiatus, I decided I had better start a new career. I was approached by Doug Sherbert (Bowen) who really wanted to start a new band. It so happened that a mutual acquaintance at that time was also preparing to open a new night club in Annapolis, The Ebb Tide Lounge. He wanted to bring on a new Lounge and feature a new band. Here again, the timing was right, so Doug, Bill Davidson, and I started rehearsing.

This was a new sound for me. Because I was used to a big bands with horns, I knew we had our work cut out for us as a three piece rock band. We needed to play the music of the age and that would require vocals as well as each member having to grab as much sound as possible from our instruments. Doug was the backbone of the sound. He played keys, and the neat thing was that he also carried the bass parts with a small hohner keyboard. It was a great idea and it worked. He also sang with power and control, slipping in and out of octaves I’d never dreamed of. And of course there was harmony, hence the time for me to broaden my contribution. I finally began to sing. A little at first, then a lot, and I haven’t stopped singing since. We had a very fat sound and even tried our hands at some Chicago stuff, try that with no horn section! Top 40 Variety was probably the best way to describe us. Some Motown, some Stones, James Taylor, Drifters. We kinda did it all. Doug reminded me last week that Butch Sutphin (an Ebb Tide doorman) wrote a second verse to Colour My World and the band adopted it for the rest of the time they were together.

Bill Davidson was a crazy man and a dynamite drummer. I never knew that Bill played until Doug told me that he did. Boy did he. He was the perfect drummer for the band. He physically had a mic but rarely used it, he was too busy driving the band from the drum seat.

At any rate we found ourselves exchanging parts so much that we ended up naming the band “The Davidson Exchange”. Lots of fun, lots of memories and lots that led me to do what I’ve always wanted to do, write and record original songs.

I left the band and the area after about a year when another life commitment called... and a good Dad I was. I left a lot behind when I moved from Annapolis and some things simply became dormant for a while. Not over with by any means, just dormant, ask someone who knows me....really knows me. Having to shelve the performing side of the music during that time, I began to write. Lots of stuff about life and love and loss and hope and dreams and trials and just all around real life experiences but that’s another story so stay tuned. Check out the "TRINITY", "Charlie", and "What's Happening Now" stories.

webmaster's note:
Brooke recently told me a story about a time when he and Bill were in Brooke's '61 Corvette. They had left a party in Southern MD and accidentally ran a stop sign. Through the stop sign was a dead end and having nowhere to go, they ended up wrecking into the woods taking bushes and trees down. They absolutely tore up that Fiberglass bodied car and while walking back to the road Bill said, "Well, that was a dumb thing to do". As they exited the woods Bill told the people who were running to help, "Don't go down there, they're all dead!". Brooke said that just kinda summed up Bill's sense of humor.

Brooke has very few pictures of The Davidson Exchange and receiving an email full would be a nice treat. Please contact the webmaster with any questions, memories, or pictures you might have.
